When this process is finished they squeeze out the liquid with a press and finally wash the cloth in clean water with Venice soap. This is how the cloth-makers bleach cloth white so that it may more readily absorb any color, (in)
A few lines later, Ramazzini also notes, "It follows that fullers and cloth-makers who spend their time with these bad smells from stinking urine and oil in a hot room, at times half-naked, are almost all cachectic [wasted away], wan, short of breath, and subject to coughs and nausea" (hi). |

There were costs, to be sure: compliance with the Clean Air and clean water Acts from that period required billions in investments for pollution scrubbers, cleaner gasoline, and new waste-filtration technology. But there was no economic catastrophe, as industry had predicted at the time. New industries were created to develop those and other clean technologies, which cemented U.S. leadership going into the 1990s. Back then, America wrote the rules and the world followed.
But no more; leadership has switched. |

Actions you can take right now
With the passage of this European Food Supplements Directive, it is time for the defenders of health freedom in this world to confront this monster of organized medicine and reveal its true nature to the world. There are a couple of things you can do right now.
First off, if you haven't already donated to the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH), please do so now. Click here to donate now. This is the group that's fighting the legal battle over the Food Supplements Directive. |

We rinse a dusty glass and allow nearly clean water to be piped miles away to a sewage-treatment plant. Then we complain that water rates are too high.
But just as we needn't waste the water coming from our taps, we needn't ignore the water falling on our roofs or running down our drains. A whole slew of innovative tools can capture that rainwater (and recycle the slightly dusty tap water) to serve other needs. Some of these technologies make even more sense in the Global South, where there are often no pipes or sewers to begin with. |
| This daunting task is complicated by the need to mix standard treatments for malnutrition —powdered milk formulas called F-75 and F-100—with clean water, which is often scarce in areas of extreme poverty and turmoil. Moreover, to ensure that the formulas are mixed properly, workers can only administer them at hospitals and feeding centers; some refugees have to travel miles to reach these centers, and overcrowding nearby can lead to the spread of disease. On top of that, milk-based products are also prone to bacterial growth. |
| The Endangered Species Act and the clean water Act both require land developers to make up for any harm they do to streams, wetlands, or habitats critical to endangered and threatened species. Simply put, a developer or other commercial occupant that compromises or destroys habitats in one location is required to protect or restore habitats of comparable scope or value somewhere else.
As with carbon credits, land developers and owners can satisfy the law through "conservation banks," which protect land containing endangered species, and "mitigation banks," which protect wetlands and streams. |

Leapfrogging [see Leapfrogging, p. 292]—skipping over outdated modes of development to embrace the cutting edge—is said to be a great equalizing force, because rich nations have already paid the price of developing technologies, competition keeps the technologies cheap, and the poor people of the world get to benefit from them. The poster child of leapfrogging is the mobile phone, but cheap computers and open-source software [see Open Source, p. |

QUICK SERVING IDEAS
• Give sandwiches extra crunch and nutrients by garnishing with lettuce leaves.
• When it comes to salads, the only limitation is your imagination. Be creative. Use a variety of different lettuce types and add your favorite foods, whether they be vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, whole grains, soy products, meats, or cheeses; almost every food goes well with lettuce. |

Did the cow have access to open fields, sunlight and clean water? Or was this a cow raised as part of a slaughterhouse operation, produced for the sole purpose of generating profits? If you eat cows' meat that has undergone that kind of experience, you are consuming a product that is tainted with the negative experience of the animal from which it came. |

| Remove the mustard greens from the water, empty the bowl, refill it with clean water, and repeat the process until no sand or dirt remains in the water—usually two or three times will do the trick.
To prepare mustard greens for most dishes, after washing them fold them in half along the stem. Since the thicker part of the stem is much tougher than the softer leaves, it is best to remove it by cutting the folded leaf along the stem and then discarding the stem. |

A food that is grown in nature -- that has been born in the soil and grows up under the sun with clean air, clean water, clean soils and under the care of small organic family farmers who used care and honesty -- creates love, health and connection in your body. Just as homeopathic water has a scientifically proven effect in living systems (including humans and animals), the homeopathic quality of foods also has such an effect. This is not something that has been well studied. |
| They have not been given clean water and, more importantly, have been planted and harvested under a system of greed, exploitation and corporate farming. Then, they've been processed and had their nutrients stripped away. They've been reformed and combined with various chemicals, such as preservatives and taste enhancers, and have been packaged in pretty boxes and put on the shelf in the grocery store.
That is a very unhappy food and, if it comes from unhappy animals, then it's even less happy. |

If you eat happy plant foods raised with clean water, healthy soil and natural sunlight, you will tend to be happy and joyous and mentally healthy. On the other hand, if you eat foods that are angry, depressed and oppressed -- like meat from cows that have been conventionally raised (and deprived of access to clean air, water and pasture) -- these foods are going to make you angry, depressed and imbalanced. It's going to affect your mental health as much as your physical health.
"You are what you eat" is a phrase of much wisdom. For example, if you eat processed factory foods, then guess what? |

| Before cooking presoaked beans, regardless of soaking method, skim off any skins that have floated to the surface, drain the soaking liquid, and then rinse with clean water. The beans should be brought to a gentle boil and then simmered with a minimum of stirring to keep them firm and unbroken. A pressure cooker or Crock-Pot can also be used for convenience. |
| Remove the leaves from the water, empty the bowl, refill with clean water, and repeat this process until no dirt remains in the water—usually two to three times will do the trick. Cut away any overly thick stems for more even cooking. If you are going to use the Swiss chard in a salad, you can dry it with paper towels or using a salad spinner. If you are going to steam the Swiss chard, don't worry about drying it.
Do not cook Swiss chard in an aluminum pot, since the oxalates contained in the Swiss chard will react with the metal and cause the pot to discolor. |

| Remove the parsley from the bowl, empty the bowl, refill it with clean water, and repeat the process until no dirt or debris remains in the water.
Since Italian flat-leaf parsley has a stronger flavor than the curly variety, it holds up better to cooking and therefore is usually the type preferred for hot dishes. It should be added toward the end of the cooking process so that it can best retain its taste, color, and nutritional value. |

They should have sunlight and clean water and the ability to live out a relatively normal, healthy life. And when they are slaughtered, it should be conducted in the most humane manner possible -- one that respects the life of each creature and how that creature is giving up its flesh for the purpose of sustaining the life of a human being. That is slightly better approach to creating meat for consumption by human beings, and it is practiced by a few small organic and Kosher beef producers. |

And no two cities are alike. Even present-day cities modeled on past ones (like Shanghai's Bund, built to resemble a European city), end up entirely unique as people live in them, use them, and change them. |

| So the issue is no longer just clean water to drink, it's clean water to shower, bathe, soak, and swim in, too. For drinking water, you can simply use a point-of-use device that will purify water only at the point at which it is used. Point-of-use devices are also available to attach to shower heads and bathtub taps. Or you can choose a point-of-entry device that will purify water at the point at which it enters your house, providing clean water from every tap. Generally speaking, point-of-use devices produce drinking water of higher purity, and some people choose to use a combination of both. |

Shouldn't we have clean water fountains in every school? What should our food system look like? What's the just and moral outcome? We won't have many opportunities to raise such difficult questions if we only aim to utilize avenues like legislation or litigation—tools that don't readily lend themselves to serious moral or ethical reflection. But how will we ever create a truly better world unless we first figure out what that should be?
Where do we go from here?
