| Another option might be stockpiling: hiding stashes of food and drinking water and trying to sit out the collapse. But defending your supplies from hungry invaders is never easy; over a long period it is next to impossible. Hunger is a powerful motivator, and people maddened by hunger or jealousy do not give up. Sooner or later you run out of ammunition, or get caught asleep with your defences lowered. Looters who are truly desperate - as the hurricane disaster in New Orleans briefly showed - soon lose their fear of guns. |
| In scenes more reminiscent of a Third World refugee camp than an American urban centre, young men fought each other for the precious drinking water as pregnant women and the elderly looked on with nothing. Don't blame them for behaving this way, I thought. This is what happens when people are desperate. |

Fluoride and chlorine in drinking water upset the balance of bowel flora as well. Anything that upsets the balance of healthy flora in the intestine sets the stage for and encourages the growth of yeast which, in turn, weakens the immune system.
Candida overgrowth can affect three general areas: gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, allergic responses, and mental/emotional problems. |

Reductions in environmental lead exposure in the United States since the 1980s, through controls on gasoline emissions and pipes that supply drinking water, could reduce the potential impact of lead to cataract development. The extent to which lead might contribute to cataract, worldwide, is unknown.
Lead exposures early in life can accumulate in bones. As bones thin with age, they not only release calcium but also other stored minerals like lead. Therefore, if lifetime lead accumulation is high, anything that increases osteoporosis could increase lead exposure. |

To minimize exposure, use only filtered drinking water, thoroughly wash fruit before eating, read labels, and avoid any products that contain fluoride.
Pesticides
According to the World Health Organization, more than 3 million people become ill and 220,000 die worldwide annually because of pesticides. Pesticides harm humans and animals alike. In the U.S., it is reported that more than one-third of the calls to animal poison centers result from pets exposed to pesticides. |

Now, he can likely get rid of this by changing his diet, dropping 100 pounds, quitting his nicotine habit, and drinking water instead of Coca-Cola. Instead, he says to his doctor, "Thanks for the advice. Can I have my prescription now?" This is a scenario faced by most physicians several times a day, year after year. It's no wonder so many docs just pull out the prescription pad rather than aggressively insisting on lifestyle change.

You can make changes in your lifestyle which will positively impact your overall health. Educate yourself about a drug therapy before you take it. If the mechanism of action of the drug doesn't make sense, search for an alternative. Remember, drugs generally block important receptors or poison crucial enzymes. The sole reliance on drug therapies doesn't make sense in most cases. |

As far as food is concerned, the only way to be sure it is pesticide-free is to buy certified organic, or to grow your own. drinking water should be filtered because chemicals of all descriptions make their way into our wells, rivers, and lakes.
Tobacco Smoke
It is well known that smoking and second hand smoke cause cancer and heart disease. It can also lead to other conditions such as: stroke, lung disease, chronic bronchitis, miscarriages, underweight babies, sudden infant death syndrome (sids), meningitis, and osteoporosis. |
| Chlorine
Chlorine is used as a bactericide in drinking water, and as a bleaching and cleaning agent. In small concentrations it is supposed to be non-toxic, or perhaps is apparently so. In strong solutions or as a pure gas, it is a deadly poison. Chlorine kills bacteria efficiently, but it doesn't discriminate; once inside the body, even in small concentrations found in municipally-treated water, it also kills the good bacteria in our colons. When absorbed through the skin from baths, showers, and hot tubs, it upsets the body's natural chemistry. |

Copper in drinking water should be limited to well under two milligrams per liter. The tolerable upper intake level (UL) for children one to three years of age is 1 mg. For children four to eight years of age it is 3 mg. For older children the UL is 5 mg. For adolescents the UL is 8 mg and for adults the UL is 10 mg. Excess copper can inhibit the production of red blood cells. Long-term intake of copper over 10 milligrams daily has resulted in liver damage.
A rare inherited trait called Wilson's disease can result in an accumulation of copper in the body. |
| About 55 percent of our water intake is from drinking water and beverages. Food also contains water in varying amounts. Strawberries, watermelon, and broccoli contain about 90 percent water. Bread and cheese contain about 35 percent water. Water from food accounts for about 35 percent of our water intake. Together, water from food and beverages accounts for 90 percent of our water intake.
When food is metabolized for energy in the cells, one byproduct is water. This metabolic water accounts for about 10 percent of our water. |
| In colder climates, the amount of fluoride in drinking water is 1.2 milligrams per liter. In warmer climates, where people drink more water, only 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter is used. Some studies have shown a reduced incidence of dental decay in populations drinking fluoridated water. There does not appear to be any advantage to fluoride supplements, topical fluoride, or fluoridated water in people over the age of 16, as the teeth have hardened by this age. In children and younger teens, topical fluoride treatments seem to reduce tooth decay. |

Many people don't realize that the natural thirst signal of the body is a sign that it requires pure, plain drinking water. Instead, they opt for other beverages in the belief that this will satisfy the body's water requirements. This is a false belief.
It is true that beverages such as tea, coffee, wine, beer, soft drinks, sports drinks and juices contain water, but they also contain caffeine, alcohol, sugar, artificial sweeteners or other chemicals that act as strong dehydrators. |
| Adding chlorine to drinking water causes a chemical reaction that results in the formation of a cocktail of carcinogens.
Some of nature's most valuable and essential anti-cancer and disease-preventive phytochemical nutrients, which are commonly found in natural foods, have been discovered to form deadly cancer-causing substances when consumed or combined with chlorinated tap water. This has recently been confirmed by a joint study undertaken in Japan by research scientists at the National Institute of Health Sciences and Shizuoka Prefectural University. |
| Of course, the old-fashioned method of boiling your drinking water for several minutes causes the chlorine to evaporate.
Finally, another inexpensive way to get rid of most chlorine in water is to use vitamin C. One gram of vitamin C will neutralize lppm (part per million) of chlorine in 100 gallons of water. This is particularly useful if you want to lie in the bathtub without suffering the irritating effects of chlorine on your skin and in your lungs. |
| Another major cause of back problems is dehydration, caused by stimulating (diuretic) foods, such as meat, coffee, tea, soft drinks, power drinks, alcohol, and by inadequate intake of fresh drinking water. Imagine that the water stored in the core of the spinal column supports over 75 percent of the weight of the upper body! Both restricted water supply and accumulated waste in the intestinal tract decrease the volume of spinal water and deplete the water contained in the disk cartilage and surrounding back muscles. |

CHAPTER 7
Water and Electrolyt
We need a constant supply of drinking water for many purposes. We can only survive a few days without water. Water and minerals work together to regulate body fluids.
Water is used to transport nutrients and wastes throughout the body. Water acts as a cushion and lubricant in joints and in the eyes. Water is needed to regulate body temperature. Water is important in maintaining normal blood pressure and blood volume. Water balance is crucial for these and other functions. Water balance is influenced by certain water-soluble minerals. |

In this study, mice were given either aloe in their drinking water (100 mg/kg of body weight for two months), or a 2 5 percent aloe vera cream, which was applied directly to wounds for six days. The results were impressive. Both the oral and the topical gel worked well—the size of wounds decreased 11 percent more in the animals taking oral aloe vera (compared to a control group that didn't get aloe). In the group that had topical aloe vera gel applied to their wounds, the size of the wounds decreased 18 percent more than the wounds of a control group that healed without the help of aloe. |

The reasoning was thus: the area was restricted from public use, and the localized contaminated groundwater did not affect public drinking-water supplies since drinking water in the area came from public water storage sources. Cleaning it up was not a priority.
A decade later, in 1995, the same year that LaShekia Chat-man, who lived amid this constellation of contaminated locales, was diagnosed with lupus, the DEC finally began full remediation at the East Delavan site two blocks away from her home. Much of the TCE- and PCB-contaminated soil was turned up and excavated from the facility. |
